Writer, Educator, and Editor
Teaching
I have been teaching composition since 2009. I have taught everything from ENG 88 (a developmental course for students still working on a GED, ESL, or in a reading course) to Introduction to Literature. My expertise lies in developmental and introduction collegiate level classes (ENG 100, 101, 102). I love teaching these course because it gives me the chance to show students who often think they "hate" writing, or are no good at it, that all they need is the right skills and they too can find a love for writing!
Curriculum Design
In 2016, I published a consumable work-book for developmental composition courses. It covers essay structure, basic grammar, and an introduction to using sources and citing in MLA format. In 2017, Ashland University adopted the book for use in their Correctional Education Program.
Ashland University then contracted me to design a course based on the book for the CEP program. The program currently has 2,000 enrolled, and is continuing to grow. Nearly all new students are required to take this course. I have continued to study and grow my understanding of education for incarcerated students, regularly attending the Reentry Summit, serving on panels at trainings and conferences, and conducting scholarly research in the field. I now serve as the Subject Matter Expert for this material at Ashland University.
